Traffic fines on rental cars in Oman: a practical guide for rental offices

A fine on a rental car usually reaches the office, because the car is registered to it, even though the renter committed it. Without a reliable way to match each fine to the right contract, the office either pays it or ends up arguing with the customer.

Who pays the fine?

A fine during the rental period is the renter's responsibility, provided the signed contract says so clearly. State that fines during the rental are on the renter and that the office may collect them with a defined admin fee.

Practical steps

  • Check fines regularly on the Royal Oman Police website or app by plate number; don't wait for the registration renewal.
  • Match the fine time to the contract the car was on, including any replacement car during the rental.
  • Notify the renter immediately with the fine number, date, place and amount, and keep proof.
  • Collect the amount directly or from the held deposit where the terms allow.
  • Pay the fine officially through the Royal Oman Police and keep the receipt; cash on the spot is not allowed.

Why the deposit matters

Some fines arrive weeks after the rental ends. Holding the deposit long enough after return protects you from fines you cannot collect later, especially from tourists.

Approximate amounts

Amounts depend on the violation. Published sources put speeding fines roughly between OMR 10 and 75, and running a red light up to OMR 75, plus black points on the licence. These are approximate and may change; the official reference is the Royal Oman Police.

How Miftahly helps

Enter the plate and time, and Miftahly finds the contract and responsible customer even after a vehicle swap, prepares the notice, adds the admin fee, collects from the deposit, and groups fines paid to the police in one voucher.

FAQ

Is the office liable for a fine the renter committed?

The fine is recorded on the car, but the signed contract makes fines during the rental the renter's responsibility, so the office collects it from them.

How do I know who was driving at the time?

Match the fine's date and time with the contract periods on that car, including replacement-car periods.

What if the fine arrives after the deposit was refunded?

Contact the customer to collect it. That is why holding the deposit for long enough after return is recommended.
